Cranford, Inc. is a fourth generation fertilizer company founded in 1933. In 1995 Cranford, Inc. saw a need to offer 100% organic fertilizers; specifically compost, to the agricultural industry. With the introduction of “Ready to Eat” pre-packaged salads, the agricultural industry understood that a clean, organic fertilizer was essential to maintain a clean and safe product for their consumers.

Cranford, Inc. began making and researching the techniques and ingredient to allow for rapid decomposition and a finished high quality product. After many trial and errors, Cranford, Inc. developed Cranford Compost, a high microbial active compost.

January 2005 Jay Cranford bought Cranford, Inc. and has expanded the focus to include home gardeners and landscapers. While maintaining current products, Jay began exploring other product opportunities. One of the goals set forth by Jay was to be able to sell his compost nationwide. Selling bulk or even bagged compost was not cost effective so an alternative approach was needed. With the birth of his first child, Jay and his wife were blessed with a colicky son. One night while Jay was rocking his new little boy, he began pondering the possibility of applying compost just to the seed line of agricultural fields. Why cover the entire field with compost when the plants are only in 4 inch wide lines. How could we apply compost to just the seed lines? This began the development of Cranford’s Granulated Compost. After 2 years, Cranford, Inc. introduced a granular compost that dissolves with water and was able to provide more microbial life and nutrients from a smaller application. This was the product he was looking for to ship nationwide. Cranford’s Granulated Compost is now in over 15 states and more are being added constantly.

Besides compost, Cranford, Inc. excavates Calcium Carbonate (Lime) from a lime deposit left behind by the Spreckels Sugar Company. The primary customers are farmers in the Salinas Valley and Monterey County. Cranford, Inc. is also a dealer of Solution Grade Gypsum by Diamond K Gypsum, Inc. located in Utah.
